Having left his friends and family behind and moved to Freedom City for five years after the death of his younger brother Brian, CJ eventually returns habitation afterward learning about the murder of his mother. From there, he works to earn back the trust of his friends and family, restore Grove Street dorsum to power, and learn the mysterious circumstances of his mother's expiry, only to later exist betrayed past his friends and forced to flee Los Santos in one case again. While exiled, however, he makes numerous new friends and allies, becomes successful and wealthy through businesses and assets in both San Fierro and Las Venturas, and somewhen returns to Los Santos to reunite with his family, exact revenge on those who wronged him, and reclaim the city for Grove Street. Carl is the son of Beverly Johnson, the younger brother of Sweet, and the older blood brother of Kendl and Brian.

Biography

Childhood

Carl "CJ" Johnson was built-in in Los Santos to Beverly Johnson. He has a father, but as seen in the intro movie, he said he didn't know him. Beverly had four children: Sean, Carl, Kendl, and Brian. Sweet states that Carl was born in the Johnson Business firm, the family unit's childhood and current home. Old Reece, a family friend and Ganton's local Barber, recalls memories of Carl'south father, although Carl tells Joey Leone that he never knew his father, and that Sweet was the "man" of the house merely made his life miserable. Carl says to Woozie in Amphibious Assault that, when he was swimming every bit a kid, he once got a condom stuck on his face, and that "horror similar that stays with you for life". This also explains his fear for pond.

The Johnson siblings, along with Melvin "Big Smoke" Harris and Lance "Ryder" Wilson, grew up on the same cul-de-sac and were childhood friends. CJ recalls Ryder dealing drugs since he was ten. Sweetness became the leader of the Grove Street Families and introduced him, CJ, and possibly Brian into the gang life.

Around 1985, the Grove Street Families were at the height of their power when they offset became pressured by Frank Tenpenny, a corrupt constabulary officer of C.R.A.S.H. It'southward likely that Officeholder Eddie Pulaski was also serving with Tenpenny at this time. The Grove Street Families went into a decline at some point between 1987 and 1992. Carl's younger brother Brian died in 1987. The cause of his death was never revealed, though it is unsaid Carl was present just did not help him, as Sugariness laments that Carl "let Brian die". He was no longer considered a fellow member of Grove Street, and would later on have to earn his way back into the gang. Big Smoke likewise implies that Carl was physically larger during that time, stating that the "East Coast got [him] all thinned out".

Adult life In Liberty City

Following Brian's decease, Carl left Los Santos and moved to Liberty City. When he arrived, he began working with Joey Leone, the son of Leone Family Don Salvatore Leone, in the car theft business, too as other pocket-size-time crimes.

Chiliad Theft Machine: San Andreas

In 1992, Beverly Johnson is killed in a bulldoze-by shooting past the Ballas. Sweetness phones Carl and informs him, and Carl agrees to return for the funeral.

Carl returns and takes a taxi to his mother's house, but is arrested and confronted by C.R.A.South.H. members Frank Tenpenny, Eddie Pulaski and Jimmy Hernandez, who explain that Carl will practice work for them, or they will frame him for killing their fellow officeholder Ralph Pendelbury (who was actually murdered by C.R.A.Due south.H. themselves). After meeting with Big Smoke at the Johnson house, Carl finally meets with his siblings and friends. Carl quickly learns that the Grove Street Families lost much of their power over the last 5 years - a consequence of the growing crack cocaine trend and, though Sugariness doesn't admit it, Sugariness non having every bit much personal forcefulness as a leader without CJ home. CJ and Sugariness work furiously to successfully bring the gang back to power, with CJ regaining his blood brother's respect in the process. This included reuniting with the Seville and Temple families, likewise equally the Aztecas leader Cesar Vialpando (who, although a rival of Sweet's at the time, began a loving human relationship with Kendl), and wiping out the Ballas, the sworn enemy of the Grove Street Families. Carl also helped OG Loc, a laughable "poser" who aspired to exist a rapper (consequently ruining rap superstar Madd Dogg'due south career in the procedure).

The gang is at the 2d acme of its power, and is planning on taking out the rest of the Ballas in an ambush, until Cesar reveals to Carl that Ryder and Big Smoke have betrayed the gang to C.R.A.Southward.H and the Ballas. Carl rushes to the gunfight, suspecting that Sweetness and the gang are walking into a trap, and manages to concord off the Ballas to rescue a heavily-wounded Sugariness, until both of them are arrested by C.R.A.Due south.H. Grove Street Families and the Varrios Los Aztecas practically disappear, and Big Smoke becomes head of a drug band and takes over Los Santos. OG Loc also becomes a rich and famous rapper, with Big Smoke interim as his manager as a means to launder his money.

C.R.A.South.H. abandons Carl in rural Whetstone to eliminate a witness confronting them. It is slowly revealed that they are being tried in court over their corruption, in a case that is chop-chop building media attending. Cesar connects CJ to his (mentally unstable) cousin, Catalina, and the ii form a relationship congenital on the robberies they commit together. Tenpenny introduces CJ to The Truth, an crumbling hippie who is supplying Tenpenny with tons of weed, and tells CJ to frame a D.A who is an enemy of Tenpenny's. Tenpenny demands that CJ pay for the shipment, which forces him to render to work with Catalina, who now has an obsessive beat out on him. Carl also meets the San Fierro Triads leader Wu Zi Mu during a street race. Catalina finds him at the race and expresses her feeling of fail and acrimony, feeling that he was only interested in her as a partner in crime, also proclaiming that she has a new boyfriend, Claude. CJ defeats Claude and Catalina in a street race, gaining the deed to Claude'due south run-down San Fierro garage. CJ leaves for San Fierro with The Truth and Tenpenny's marijuana (despite Tenpenny betraying The Truth). They meet Cesar and Kendl at the garage in Doherty, San Fierro. CJ is aroused most the bad country of the garage and believes that it is completely useless. Kendl explains to CJ that the property is a great opportunity, and through The Truth, he hires Dwaine, Jethro and Zero to piece of work in the garage.

Carl meets with Woozie in San Fierro and the two quickly get stiff allies, collaborating to take down each of their enemies - Carl targeting the Loco Syndicate (Big Smoke's suppliers) and Woozie's rivals, the Da Nang Boys. Carl infiltrates and eventually kills all the main members - Jizzy B, T-Bone Mendez, and fifty-fifty Ryder from the Grove Street Families. The garage (now a automobile theft band), as well as renting out holding, has earned Carl a pocket-size sum of money. He receives a surprise phone telephone call from Mike Toreno, a quondam member of the Loco Syndicate (who was apparently killed), who reveals himself to be a government agent and is recruiting Carl'southward help in commutation for releasing Sweet from a life sentence. Although it is a well-kept hole-and-corner from all of his friends, The Truth finds Carl at Toreno's place of operation, and warns Carl that Toreno can't be trusted. He continues to recruit Carl'southward help in stealing a Jetpack from Area 69, which is needed for The Truth'southward goal of stealing mysterious, enlightening green goo.

Woozie invites CJ to the Triad'south glamorous 4 Dragons Casino in Las Venturas. Upon arrival, Carl is given shares in the casino by Woozie "in commutation for some help setting it up". They are faced with ambitious competition from the Mafia-run Caligula'due south Palace and, as revenge, spend fourth dimension planning an extremely elaborate heist of Caligula's. This dually involves Carl infiltrating Caligula'south inner circle of management (by run a risk of The Truth's association with music manufacture employees Kent Paul and Maccer) to work with their manager, Ken Rosenberg, and even Don Salvatore Leone, after helping the trio fake their deaths to escape Salvatore's rage. During this time period, C.R.A.S.H. extracts the final of Carl'south labor before they endeavour to kill Carl (and kill Hernandez for snitching on them), with Carl killing Pulaski and escaping live. Carl, by gamble, sees Madd Dogg attempting suicide and saves his life, partially out of guilt for ruining his career.

Carl'due south ongoing vendetta towards Tenpenny and Big Smoke, finalized past Madd Dogg having to sell his mansion to drug lord Big Poppa, prompts Carl to return to Los Santos, taking back the rapper'south mansion by forcefulness. While recording Madd Dogg's new album, Toreno gives Carl the last of his work before Sugariness is released from prison. Sweet is disgusted at Carl for his new millionaire's lifestyle, and for having forgotten all well-nigh helping the Grove Street Families. Sugariness immediately takes Carl back to Grove Street to begin their task of reclaiming all of their turf. As the gang slowly begins their 3rd return to power, Carl manages to get Madd Dogg'south rhyme book back from OG Loc, reviving Madd Dogg'south career, as hitting Big Smoke close to domicile. In the case against Tenpenny, it'south shown on the news that since at that place is no show implicating him in his criminal activities, he would walk free; seconds after, citywide riots embark in outrage at Tenpenny'southward acquittal. During the confusion, Grove Street Families retakes nigh half of the city's turf, and, afterwards an set on on his Cleft Palace, Carl kills Big Smoke. After Carl and Sweetness chase him across the city through the riots, Tenpenny as well dies after his firetruck falls from a bridge in a higher place Grove Street. At a commemoration in the Johnson house, Madd Dogg, accompanied by Ken, Kent, and Maccer, announces "our get-go gold record" to Carl. At the same time, Sweet insists on making Grove Street a priority, while Kendl suggests going dorsum to Las Venturas with Woozie, just Carl's only reply was that he was "fittin' to hit the block, run into what's happening".

Later on GTA San Andreas

"Peradventure, here... things will be different."
This article, or parts of it, are Speculation and may non turn out to be correct.

At the very end of the game, Carl is a immature and wealthy human being. His assets and business interests include the Grove Street Families gang and Madd Dogg's contract in Los Santos, a car garage and several other properties in San Fierro, and shares in the Iv Dragons Casino in Las Venturas, as well as the government'southward $sixty million jetpack.

It is suggested that Carl, Madd Dogg, Kent Paul and Maccer are to go on a world wide tour, as mentioned past Madd Dogg during the game's concluding cutscene. Maccer and Kent Paul are to ride along, giving another hint that Carl helped the two rebuild their ring.

An Easter egg in GTA IV suggests that Carl, along with the other 3D Universe protagonists, are dead. However, this is only to commemorate the game being the start of a new era and it is not considered catechism. Rockstar Games have stated this is "a petty joke to our fans".

A billboard outside the Centre Park Due east Safehouse depicts a man strongly resembling Carl in a suit and tie drinking wine with the word "Fruntalot" abreast it, which is presumably the product that is being advertised. Either way, neither this nor the same Easter egg is considered canon for the 3D Universe.

Personality

CJ is markedly different from the previous playable characters in the Thou Theft Auto series. While Claude and Tommy Vercetti are both depicted equally completely heartless and feeling no regret for all of the people that they impale, CJ is depicted as having a considerably less violent personality, occasionally giving his targets a chance to redeem themselves. An example is his failed attempt at convincing Eddie Pulaski to meet that he was no more than than Tenpenny's pawn in the mission High Noon. Furthermore, CJ displays genuine remorse for having to impale Ryder and Large Smoke, who he considered close friends. Notwithstanding, CJ has no problem with killing members of other gangs, and willfully slaughters any that go in his fashion of reclaiming Grove Street Family unit turf or attempt to sabotage his businesses, though in return, the gangsters are trying to kill CJ also.

CJ's naïve personality, face-value interpretations of other characters' responses occasionally leads them to question CJ'southward intelligence (The Truth, Catalina). Despite his mostly calm nature, CJ has shown a very tearing and aggressive side when his family is threatened, equally with the mission Deconstruction, where he vowed to teach a lesson to the construction workers who insulted his sis, Kendl, and proceeded to impale them all, including burying the Foreman alive in a portable toilet. CJ, like his brother Sweet, holds a deep seated loyalty towards Grove Street and the hood, as seen in his reaction to the resentful mental attitude of his friends and siblings early. Though, towards the cease of the game, while Sweet was in prison, and CJ was making progress in San Fierro and Las Venturas, the unattended Grove Street became Ballas turf and was filled with crack dealers. CJ tries to get his brother to carelessness the hood for their assets elsewhere, but he is quickly convinced into re-taking the turf and rebuilding the Grove Street Family. Despite his young historic period, Carl ofttimes handles situations in a professional manner. This is shown during the mission The Meat Business when Carl keeps encouraging Ken Rosenberg to calm downwards and remember that "you lot're the boss".

At the beginning of the game, Carl, much like Sugariness, had a very gang-based and ghetto mentality, stubbornly holding to his gangster views and beliefs, such as his unwillingness to "rat" towards the cops, holding onto his "street code" and naïvely believing that other gangsters also held onto them, and using outdated methods to create tools, such as a silencer. Shortly after being exiled from Los Santos, Carl continued to hold onto these beliefs until Cesar Vialpando revealed that Fume had been a drug dealer for a long fourth dimension and was transporting drugs from San Fierro, and Kendl noted that Smoke's house was purchased with drug coin.

However, soon later on his arrival in San Fierro, Carl gradually loses his gang-based mentality and adopts more strategic, intelligent, and cunning viewpoints and mentality. This is demonstrated by planting drugs on a D.A.'s automobile and reporting to the SFPD, leading The Da Nang Boys away from Chinatown to permit a Triad leader to escape assassination, using stinger traps to steal a car without damaging it, scaring a high-ranking mobster into revealing his identity, planning a major Casino heist in Venturas, saving Madd Dogg'south life by using a truck full of crates, leading an all-out set on with the Triads to reclaim Madd Dogg's mansion from the Vagos, and using a SWAT Tank to intermission into a heavily-protected building. Carl also becomes the successful manager of Madd Dogg, and through his diverse connections, helps revitalize Madd Dogg'due south career, further showing Carl's growing mindset and business concern-like methods.

Appearance

In the Beta Version and in The Introduction, CJ is seen wearing a blackness hoodie with blue jeans. CJ'due south default appearance in the final version of the game is a white tank height, with blue jeans and black tennis shoes. He is an African-American with a cesar hairstyle, black hair, brown optics, a fleck of facial hair and a thin torso. CJ has been compared to and dislocated for both his father and his blood brother Brian, suggesting that CJ bears a keen resemblance to both of them. CJ is also stated to have been fatter or more muscular earlier he left for Liberty Metropolis, with his friends stating the east coast "thinned him out". Carl is noticeably brusque, as the player can come across when Carl is standing next to other characters such every bit Sweet, Big Smoke, Grove Street members, and even Ryder, who has been belittled for his height numerous times. Some mission cutscenes testify Carl slightly limping his left foot. This is also notable if the player enters the slow motion cheat twice and watches the dart animation carefully.

CJ can have a large diversity of appearances depending on the role player. For example, he can wear cheap clothes from Binco or luxury apparel from Zippo. He tin be muscular, sparse or fat with the use of gyms and restaurants. He can also have unlike tattoos and hairstyles. Carl was the almost customizable protagonist until the release of Grand Theft Auto Online.

Some other interesting dynamic matter about Carl's appearance is that his quotes depend on his clothing and physical appearance. For instance, he will utilise more slang when dressed in lower-terminate clothing, speak in a more refined tone when wearing loftier-stop clothes, or even brand food-related comments when he is fatter.

  • It is possible that CJ is a Christian. In the mission, First Date, Carl tells Catalina that he is a "God fearing peace-loving man of the people". Like Franklin Clinton, Carl tin can purchase several religious tattoos (most notably a Virgin Mary tattoo and a cross) and a Cross Chain sold at Didier Sachs, further supporting this theory.
    • However, Carl may have told that to Catalina sarcastically, especially given the actions that CJ commits throughout the storyline. • When Rockstar Games revealed that Carl was blackness, there was considerable uproar in the media regarding the possibility of racism. It was believed Rockstar had taken a swell risk past making a black protagonist. Despite this, when the game was released, Carl'due south character was very well received and Rockstar were praised developing him to accept emotions and morals that weren't nowadays with previous protagonists. Many players even said that they had felt it wrong and out of character for Carl to randomly impale innocent people in-game. This trait was carried over to Niko Bellic.
  • If CJ becomes fatty plenty, his head will e'er confront slightly to the side when stood still.
  • In the Yard Theft Auto V mission Derailed, there is a challenge for the mission, which is "Better than CJ".
    • This is a reference to Incorrect Side of the Tracks, where CJ and Big Fume chases a train on a Sanchez motorbike.
